Abstract

The article relates to the author's experience in having to spend a day with singer and composer Duke Ellington. The author met with Ellington at the National Recording Studios, where he was to record part of the music for a ballet. The ballet "The River" is commissioned by the American Ballet Theatre. Just before the first take of the recording, Ellington spoke to several members of the band. Ellington led the band through six or seven more takes until he got the right tune.
