Abstract

The article provides information related to the African violet plant. African violets were first discovered over one hundred years ago in the Usambara Mountains in what is now Tanzania, Africa. In 1892, Baron Walter von Saint Paul found an unknown plant, collected some seeds and sent them to his father in Germany. This new plant was called "Saintpaulia" after its discoverer, and "ionatha" meaning "violet-flowered." Today, its just called Africa violets.
