Abstract

The article discusses the artisan skill gained by very considerable numbers of young people in Kenya, even though their years of schooling had been completely devoid of prevocational basis and practical work experience. Key issues discussed include the relationship between the school system and labor productivity, the emergence of some form of self-employment in Kenya during the 1960s, contradictions in the training of artisans and the issues' implications for government policies on education and labor.
