Abstract

This article discusses the evolution of the Cuban economy since 1990. To understand what has happened in the Cuban economy since the early1990s, three basic aspects should be considered that mark the situation. First, the revolution was devised to give Cubans a free and independent homeland. A second factor is the economic war unleashed by the United States against Cuba from the very beginning of the revolution. The third factor is the model of relations that existed with the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance. The article describes the adjustments made by the Cuban government to strengthen its economy after the collapse of communism in Russia. Cuba's guiding principle was to retain its socialist form of government while making necessary changes in its economic policies.
