Abstract

An advanced high side voltage control (HSVC) that can improve power system angle and voltage stability by adding supplemental control to conventional generator excitation systems has been developed. An earlier version of this advanced HSVC was presented at the IEEE PES 2000 Summer Meeting. This paper describes the principles, characteristics, and advantages of applying HSVC as well as highlights of recent improvements for estimating the high side voltage by incorporating active current into the control algorithm. We confirmed by simulation analysis that the accuracy of the estimated high side voltage and the resultant high side voltage control are improved. Moreover, the improved method was verified at a hydro power plant, and it was shown that the advanced HSVC was accurate and the control was stable, as reported in a companion paper.
