- The article discusses the transition from relatively small research institutes to huge research establishments which compelled scientists to face new problems of organizational structure and of human relationships. Because every large-scale establishment involves many diverse field activities and expert knowledge, the necessity for a single unifying personality at its head is even more obvious than it was in the older type of research institute. For it is difficult to imagine a large establishment without a director who embodies the common aim.
