Abstract

This article reports on Ehud Olmert, prime minister of Israel. Elected in 2006, Olmert was thought to be a candidate committed to the peace process. However, when Hizballah struck in Israel, killing 8 soldiers and kidnapping 2, Olmert struck back ordering extensive air strikes and limited ground incursions in Lebanon, Hizballah's home ground. The move had provoked fears that it will escalate into a wider war in the Middle East.
