The article presents information on a dictionary, known by the acronym DARE. It is a comprehensive catalogue of some 60,000 regional and folk expressions used in the U.S. The dictionary is sponsored by the American Dialect Society. Over the years, field workers visited 1,002 communities around the country and interviewed informants, who answered questionnaires that consisted of 847 queries about local vocabulary and usage. The field workers also collected tape recordings of casual conversation.
