Abstract
- The article focuses on the progress in the art and methods of elementary teaching in the U.S. The inspiration to progress may be seen in the frequent statements of many of the leading educators. Teachers and superintendents find by experience and special observation that there are fundamental defects in the common methods of training children. The 1881 superintendent of Cleveland, Ohio protested against the practice of giving so much time in graded schools to arithmetic and geography.
