Abstract

This article reviews the evolution of the Spanish Popular Party (PP) in a decade in which, after 20 years in opposition, it reached national government, ruling Spain from 1996 to 2004, and finally going unexpectedly into opposition. This period is characterized by a lack of fundamental party changes, making the PP a clear example of how, when a party succeeds, internal changes are unlikely. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
