Abstract

The article focuses on the life and works of Henry A. Rowland, an American physicist. Rowland was born on November 27, 1848, at Honesdale, Pennsylvania. In 1882, he made and demonstrated the concave diffraction grating. To scratch 14,400 parallel, evenly spaced three-inch lines for every inch across five or six inches of the mirrored, gently spherical surface of his gratings, he invented and built the ruling engine. His engines went on working long after his death in 1901.
