Abstract
- The article examines the public and internal rhetoric of the closing of the laboratory school at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. The number of operating schools in the National Association of Laboratory School has declined between 1970 and 1981. The closing of the laboratory school coincides with the development of a new mission for its School of Education in the 1960s and early 1970s. The closure of the school gave the School of Education a place to research techniques in education and to transmit them to a new generation of teachers.
