Abstract

The article reports on the move of Ireland to raise its 2010 target for electricity from renewable sources. It has increased from 13.2 percent as recommended in a 2001 European Union directive to 15 percent. According to the Irish Ministry of Energy, such move had become possible due to a doubling in production capacity in two years and a new renewables support system. A more ambitious 2020 target will be proposed by the Ministry in a forthcoming green paper on energy. It also announced a national energy efficiency awareness campaign for launch in autumn 2006.
