Abstract

The article discusses the changing perceptions about China and defends the country by terming some of the criticisms about it as overstatements. The picture currently depicted in the media is a far cry from the picture of an utopian country which was presented to the world sometime back. The country was exposed to intimate outside viewing while pursuing its modernization goals as it decided to honestly evaluate its problems and make full use of Western technology. According to several recent books, articles and newspaper columns, China is suffering from economic insufficiency, social immorality, corruption, repression and a self-serving bureaucracy. However, an outsider has limited ability to understand this vast and complex nation with a population of one billion people.
