Abstract

The article presents information on issues related to strategic considerations concerning nuclear deterrence. It is informed that though elimination of nuclear weapons is practically impossible, its presence instead acts as a stabilizing military factor in Europe. Even the U.S. government also extended its nuclear deterrence to protect its European allies. However, as the Soviet Union government developed advanced nuclear power, the U.S. government refined its deterrence policy by introducing the "flexible response" policy that relies on counterforce and damage limitation strategies. It also discusses the security issues within the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and within individual Alliance nations regarding inhibitions on use of nuclear weapons.
