Abstract

The article reports on the government in Great Britain that has announced a project worth £12 million with the objective to develop intelligent transport systems for improving safety and road management. The drive came a week after insurer Norwich Union rolled out the first GPS-based pay-as-you-drive insurance scheme in Great Britain. The "Future Intelligent Transport Systems" initiative has been set up to stimulate new ideas, products or services that could help to improve public transport, reduce road congestion and accidents, boost freight transportation and provide better travel information to the public. The government thinks that the new information technology that includes distributed networks of sensors and data mining will help to develop efficient transport systems.
