Abstract

The article presents a study which measures the linear dimension and absolute volume of various brain structures in schizophrenics and control groups' brains through an autopsy. Researchers have measured the brain weight, total cortical volume, temporal lobe volume, hippocampal volume, average cortical mantle width, average cingulate gyrus height, average corpus callosum width, thalamic volume, and lenticular nucleus volume based on its possible significance in the schizophrenic syndrome. The results suggests no significant differences between the schizophrenic and control groups except for the average corpus callosum width wherein it is larger in schizophrenics. However, the average corpus callosum width did not correlate with the age, race, and sex of patients.
