Abstract

The authors discuss the need for affordable energy in emerging nations as a key element for sustainable economic and social development. Developing countries will be supplying 70% of the new energy demand, with 49% coming from Asia alone. Fossil fuels such as oil, gas, and coal make up most of the energy supply in Asia, report the authors, which is also increasing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. The Kyoto Protocol's Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is working to reduce emissions in developing countries.
