Abstract

This article discusses the innovative instructional techniques to convey to undergraduate students a sense of the meaning, and importance, of structured inequality. It describes the use of a simple survey with a discussion in an online sociology course to create a setting in which undergraduate students may learn about inequality from the study of everyday life. The method used in the study relies on a common experience of a gendered household division of labor and on the use of Hochschild's recognition.
