Abstract

The article offers suggestions on how to develop writing-to-learn assignments for students in the U.S. Writing-to-learn assignments help students understand, reflect upon, and question concepts in more meaningful ways than do essay examinations, reading reports, and research papers. The examples here centers on apparel, however, they are models that can be adapted easily to other areas of family and consumer sciences (FCS), in both secondary and postsecondary programs. Furthermore, one of the best ways for students to become involved in the classroom is to write often and in as many forms as are possible.
