Abstract

This article examines the role of knowledge codification. The study employs a competence-based approach to the firm to analyze the recent destabilization of internal labor markets. Findings shows that increasing knowledge codification made possible by the diffusion of information and communication technologies has made competences less dependent on individuals. Moreover, knowledge has been increasingly incorporated in firms, which has played an essential role in lowering the relative cost of human resource management strategies based on external labor flexibility.
