Abstract
- The article discusses the contrasting views on the skin color of the Greek mythological figure Andromeda. It examines works that indicated Andromeda as a black or a white Ethiopian woman. It explores the interpretation of Andromeda in the romance "Aethiopica," by Heliodorus. According to the author, Heliodorus' indication of Andromeda as a white Ethiopian was probably influenced by the images he saw in ancient paintings. Meanwhile, mythographer Ovid indicated that Andromeda is a black woman. The black Andromeda indication of Ovid has captivated the attention of few artists, the author noted. She cites some paintings depicting black Andromeda.
