Abstract

The article discusses the climate for environmental politics in Australia from 1983 to 1990. Between 1983 and 1990, there were several disputes between environmentalists and the mining, timber and energy industries over preservation of wilderness areas and rivers, remnant eucalyptus forests and rainforests. During the 1980s, environmental organizations grew in Australia. Two observations help define the period between 1983 and 1990 leading up to the 1993 elections. First, the absence of a national Green Party. Second, the economic context of Australian politics during the period started to reshape the landscape for environmental politics.
