Abstract

The antioxidant activity of total flavanoid preparation from Solenostemon rotundifolius was investigated in normolipidemic and hyperlipidemic rats. Concentrations of peroxidation products namely malondialdehyde, hydroperoxides and conjugated dienes were increased significantly in the tissues of rats administered flavinoids at a level of 1 mg <superscript>-1</superscript> 100 g BW <superscript>-1</superscript> day irrespective of the nature of diet. The activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase were enhanced significantly in the experimental animals. Concentration of glutathione also showed elevated levels in the tissues of experimental rats. The elevated levels of glutathione and stimulated activities of antioxidant enzymes account for the antioxidant activity of these flavonoids. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
