Abstract

The article focuses on the "Linguistic Atlas" and the dialect of the Gawain poems. It focuses on the dialectical characteristics of "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" and the linguistic data of poems included. It also discusses the issues involving the possibility that the texts represent a commixture of languages which may be dialectally distinct and the possibility of scribal layering. This article is also, in part, the result of research into the meter of alliterative verse. It presents words from the original manuscript and their construction and meanings.
