Abstract
- The article discusses the role of the memory of World War I on the formation of a national identity in Australia. The "culture war" of the 1910s and 1920s is highlighted, citing the opposing arguments over the positive and negative portrayals and consequences of the war. The author focuses on war memorials and how they reveal two differing cultures in Australia that came to be at odds with each other. The particular social conflict over the Australian War Memorial and its political ideology of martial nationalism.
