Abstract

This article discusses impacts on Donana National Park of the tailings dam failure in 1998 in Spain. According to the authors, a tailing dam partially collapsed and released acidic water and mud containing toxic metals to the Guadiamar River. They used biochemical markers in the kidneys of Algerian mice {Mus spretus) to assess proteins involved in cell cycle regulation. The cyclins and their associated kinases increased, while some cell cycle inhibitors were generally shown to decrease. They concluded that toxic metals after an ecological disaster provoked the induction of kidney cell proliferation.
