Abstract
- The article reports on the ecological study of the algae living on the British Chalk-Cliffs. The growth of the algal on the surface of the cliffs forms four distinct horizontal belts, which extend for long distances and are interrupted only by caves and stone embankments. These belts are the Fucus belt, Enteromorpha belt, Chrysophyceae belt, and Endoderma belt. The distribution of the algae on the face of the cliff is influenced by factors such as the amount of water, the salt concentration and the temperature. The belts have algal vegetation, which can be grouped into a number of communities whose distribution is related to their position with respect to high tide level, to the degree of illumination and to the nature of the substratum.
