Abstract

An essay is presented that discusses the practice of taking statements or events out of context in order to discredit political opponents during an election. The author reports that 2008 U.S. presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama have pledged not to use this tactic against each other, but the author wonders if they will keep that promise if it appears to be the only way to get elected.
