Abstract

This article discusses bystander behavior as it affects the performances of businesses. The role of employees in detecting dangerous or unscrupulous behavior in risk management strategies is described. Managers are encouraged to allow mechanisms for dissent to develop. Dialogue between U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) scientist Rodney Rocha and his supervisor Linda Ham regarding safety issues prior to the crash of the U.S. Space Shuttle Columbia are described. The communications breakdown at NASA is used as an example of how organizational behavior can stifle dissent. Strategies for developing organizational environments that encourage the correction of risky behavior are noted.
