Abstract

An interview with Cornell University historian Joan Jacobs Brumberg on the cultural and historical issues surrounding eating disorders is presented. She discusses the cultural matrices that influenced eating behaviors from the holy anorexics of medieval times to the lives of contemporary young girls. She offers her perspectives on why there is little visual imagery about eating disorders. She also talks about her books "Fasting Girls: The History of Anorexia Nervosa" and "The Body Project: An Intimate History of American Girls."
