Abstract

This article focuses on the artist William Cowper and his texts narrating an encounter with a group of gypsies. It discusses that it is a passage often passed over by criticism, but close attention to his text is revealing. It mentions that such attention emphasizes the distinct but importantly connected ideas of ease and indolence, of being outcast and of wandering that permeates the poem, shedding a different light on them than that which has been widely known by criticism on the poem more generally.
