Abstract
- The article profiles children's book author and illustrator Brian Wildsmith. Wildsmith's education, early career as an art teacher in a British grammar school, and his decision to create artwork for books are discussed. His early work creating book covers for Oxford University Press is examined, and Wildsmith comments on the influence of editor Mabel George. He reflects on the process he uses when painting and illustrating as well as his desire to create unique interpretations for concepts expressed in his books. The importance of fables, religious-themed books, and board books are also discussed.
