Abstract
- This article discusses the polarising character of Islamophobia as a factor in Dutch politics. The political messages of the right wing members of parliament Pim Fortuyn and Hirsi Ali is framed in terms of their anti-Muslim rhetoric and its influence on the development of open opposition to Muslim culture in Dutch society. More integrationist approaches to religion and state are framed in terms of the work of Ella Vogellar, who reinforced multiculturalism in her position as the cabinet minister responsible for social integration.
