Abstract

The article focuses on the painting "Moses’s Ethiopian Wife," done by Flemish painter Jacob Jordaens circa 1650. The author explores both Jewish and Catholic religious accounts of Moses marrying a black woman, specifically in the "Jewish Antiquities," written by Jewish historian Josephus, and German reformist Martin Luther's "Bible" translation. She also explores contradictory literature regarding the race of Moses's wife written by Protestant leader John Calvin. A discussion of race represented in contemporary period art is also presented.
