This essay discusses the long-term costs of an economic stimulus package that is being designed to deal with the recession in the U.S. economy in 2008. The risks of inflation posed by the proposal to increase government spending on infrastructure as a strategy to encourage countercyclical spending are considered. The problem of inflation is presented as a threat that accompanies such countercyclical spending.
