Abstract

The article discusses the permeability of alcohols in the oral mucosa. A study was conducted using anesthetized dogs. They had their oral mucous membrane prepared with an acetylcholine (Ach) and alcohol solution which was applied to the surface of the tongue. The action potential of the tongue muscle was measured after stimulation with Ach by a bipolar needle electrode which also recorded the EMG of the tongue. It was found that dihydric alcohols are permeable.
