Abstract
- The author discusses the legal and linguistic frameworks deployed to protect Native American sacred places. He maintains that U.S. federal policies are written in a language that does symbolic violence to the environments it purports to protect. He highlights the inclusion of sacred places on the National Register of Historic Places that represents the recognition of Native American cultural heritage. He argues for the need to rethink categories and develop a language that is sensitive, flexible and culturally specific.
