Abstract
- As new waves of economic and political nationalism surge through developing countries in Latin America, Africa, and Asia, the risk of expropriation grows for U.S. companies with plants and facilities in those countries. No matter how ably U.S. businessmen work to check this trend, new cases of expropriation continue to be reported. Once a company's facilities have been confiscated by a government, what remedies and counteraction can be taken by management? In the aftermath of a typical confiscation, the company goes through four phases, each entailing different kinds of tactics and pressures. These phases are described in this article, together with appraisals of the efficacy of different approaches. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
