Abstract
- Systematic high resolution spectral investigations of trivalent holmium doped in Sc<subscript>2</subscript>O<subscript>3</subscript> polycrystalline transparent ceramic were performed. The spectral characteristics (Stark energy levels, absorption, and emission cross sections) as well as the Judd–Ofelt (JO) intensity parameters Ω<subscript>t</subscript>(t=2,4,6) for the f-f transitions of the C<subscript>2</subscript>-symmetry center of Ho<superscript>3+</superscript> in Sc<subscript>2</subscript>O<subscript>3</subscript> transparent ceramics were determined. The JO intensity parameters are used to estimate the emission probabilities, radiative lifetimes, and branching ratios of the different Ho<superscript>3+</superscript> transitions. The emission gain cross section for the <superscript>5</superscript>I<subscript>7</subscript>→<superscript>5</superscript>I<subscript>8</subscript> and <superscript>5</superscript>I<subscript>6</subscript>→<superscript>5</superscript>I<subscript>8</subscript> transitions of special interest for laser application were determined.
