The article discusses the influence of forest engineer Octavio Elorrieta y Artaza on forest policy in Spain in the early 20th century. His career in the Spanish forest Administration is discussed, especially his proposals regarding forest resource utilization as a potential solution to agrarian social problems in southern Spain in the 1930s. The continuing relevance of his ideas about increasing forest resource productivity while conserving forestland is discussed, as are the shortcomings of his purely economic view of forestry.
