Abstract

The article analyzes the effect of election base of executive boards on the internal political life of national unions in the U.S. Unions exist to represent their members and therefore should exhibit characteristics of representative government. The significance of the election base for union executive board members depends upon the role of executive boards in the government of unions. The opportunities for effective dissent and opposition within a national union, without regional elections, are often almost nonexistent.
