Abstract

The article discusses the history of late-19th century publishing of collected editions of famous American and British authors. It describes the development of publishing the collected editions of entire books of author's works and its influence on reading and print cultures in the U.S. and Great Britain. Other subjects under discussion include the collected editions of author Walter Scott's "Waverly" novels, the compilation of author Charles Dickens' novels, and the printing practices of publishing companies such as Scribner's and Houghton Mifflin.
