Abstract

The article discusses research sponsored by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research into procedures for appraising or evaluating the performance of subordinates. The researchers concluded that employee appraisers do not always complete appraisal forms when required to do so; they do not always complete every section of the form as required; and they do not always acknowledge their authorship. Employees are also reluctant to be interviewed by appraisers. The article presents recommendations for improving the process, including follow-up and use of a second appraiser.
