Abstract

The article discusses industrial relations arbitration from a sociological perspective and a focus on third party intervention. Six reasons are given for third party intervention. Each reason affects its form--for example the existence of a deadlock due to equal bargaining power between the parties can take the form of conciliation. Four approaches to arbitration award include splitting the difference, one side or the other, and what the market would have produced. Arbitration procedures organized by the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service and the role of third party intervention during collective bargaining in Great Britain are mentioned.
