Abstract

The article focuses on the usage of algorithm in public service. Numerous papers, articles and books have demonstrated and discussed the method, and algorithms have been successfully applied to many problems in industry, commerce and government. Using algorithms in the public sector, should at least be aware of all the available methods and when to apply them. There is a particularly straightforward case in local government in which algorithms were successfully applied. The implementation of the Social Services Act of 1970 involved social workers whose work had previously been governed by one area of legislation only, in a much wider range of responsibilities and hence in the need to act in accordance with a much wider range of legislation. The traditional view that if they had more to learn they should receive more training would have been counter-productive. Sections of the legislation were selected, the algorithms were designed by Cambridge Consultants (Training) Ltd, vetted by expert committees and tried out extensively by social workers, who found that they could use them quickly and effectively.
