Abstract

The article discusses the use of the concept of moral economy in the discipline of social studies in 20th century scholarship. It explores the origins of moral economy in the writings of sociologist E. P. Thompson, the application of the moral economy heuristic to anthropological studies of resistance and power relationships among people in Third World or developing countries, and the use of the concept in studies related to immigration, assimilation, and the abuse of immigrants. Other subjects under discussion include the political uses of religion in tribal communities, the psychology of power dynamics, and the work of political scientist James Scott.
