Abstract
- The article presents an exploration into the history of the British silver trade in India in the late 18th century. Details are given citing and criticizing prevailing historical views that silver was not a major sector of British commercial interest. It is asserted that the British export of silver was conducted on a large scale after 1785 for trade, debt-relief and military finance. An overview is given of several British firms in India, particularly the East India Company from the late 18th century into the early 19th.
