Abstract

The article examines Staphylococcus (S.) aureus isolates by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and by staphylococcal protein A (spa) and multilocus sequence typing. The isolates were taken from clinical specimens from hospital patients in Shanghai, China. Gram stain, latex agglutination, and tube coagulase, among others, were used to identify the isolates. The findings support previous studies that the genotypes of methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) isolates are more diverse than are those for Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL)-positive and -negative methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) isolates.
