Abstract

Adult development theories describe a variety of changes which occur in the aging process. At work, these changes occur simultaneously with career events. While the latter events have received considerable attention, little is known about the broader and more subtle aging processes and how they affect work-related criterion measures. An integrated model of the aging process is developed and tested in this study. The results indicate that specific and unique developmental task accomplishments are related to at least one important work-related criterion, work satisfaction. While career development research has focused on organizationally-defined processes such as entry and promotion, this paper supports the utility of understanding the broader psycho-social dynamics of adult development.
